Athlete Spotlight: Jenna

Jenna is a bad ass in many, many ways. For one, she plays beach volleyball just about every weekend. Now if you know me at all, then you know that’s a big passion of mine and anyone that shares a love for the beach volleyball lifestyle automatically goes up a bunch of notches in my book. Besides all that, she’s super cool, down to earth, kicks CrossFit’s butt on a daily basis, and manages to work full-time and raise teen-age kids. It’s impressive on many fronts. Here are some things you may not know…

If you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you do?

Open my own restaurant and climb Mt. Everest.

If you could magically have the ability to play one instrument, what would you choose?

Singing counts. Piano! I’ve always loved and wanted to play the piano

What is one nickname you have?

Shumway (yes my nickname is my last name, lol)

What do you do in normal life?

Ummm, besides work? Play beach volleyball, travel, do fun things with my teenage kiddos!

What’s your favorite food?

All of it! If I had to choose, a good steak and crème brulee.

What’s your favorite sandwich?

Ruben.

What’s your favorite water activity?

Jet skis.

Have you ever had a pukie? What was the workout?

No, but very close to….it was a fireman memorial WOD, titled “Wildfire” I did in Colorado after the devastating Waldo Canyon fire in 2012. I honestly don’t remember the whole workout (weights and rep scheme), but it was a partner one. 6 rounds: rope climbs, partner deadlifts, C&J’s, partner tire flip, 200m partner carry, and some more that I can’t remember. My partner was a 220 guy that couldn’t RX anything, but we did all the women’s RX weights, and I had to carry him too! It was an extensive amount of reps, I want to say like 30 or more of every movement (besides rope climbs). Needless to say, it took us almost 2 hours, and I almost puked, passed out, cried and quit at many different points during the workout! I have never done that one again….

What’s your favorite vacation spot?

Somewhere I’ve never been! But to date, Rome, Italy.

How often do you look at the WOD on the site? What do you think as you look at it?

Rarely. If it involves running I have to mentally prepare all day! Other than that I just look to see what clothes I need to pack depending on the movements involved.

What would your ideal job be?

Call me crazy, but a Doctor of Psychology.

Not many people look this composed when doing thrusters and double unders.

[100 burpees for time, emom 5 thrusters] This one! Although they both suck….

Name one movie you think sucks.

Catwoman. It was terrible!

What’s your favorite comedy?

This is a hard one….I’ll go Old School and say Tommy Boy.

Lodi High School (NorCal)

Neither….

Name one fitness goal that you have.

Get better at body weight movements (pullups, chest to bar, T2B, muscle ups, handstand walks, etc.)

Name three things on your bucket list.

Tahiti vacation in one of the huts with a glass bottom over the ocean. Own a yacht. Go to a summer Olympics.

Minute 1: Deadlifts (135#/95#)
Minute 2: Deadlift + Power Clean
Minute 3: Deadlift + Power Clean + Front Squat
Minute 4: Deadlift + Power Clean + Front Squat + Jerk
Minute 5: Deadlift + Power Clean + Front Squat + Jerk + Burpee

Rest 3 minutes between AMRAP’s. Score total reps for each 5 minute AMRAP. 1 rep is equal to entire complex, e.g. during minute 3, deadlift + power clean + front squat is 1 rep. You can not let go of the bar in the middle of a rep.
