The Big Show
For those of you at LAX who were not here last spring, this is likely your first CrossFit Games experience. Ah, to be young again… I wish I could go back to my first time.
Everything is a big unknown. You’re thrust into places you’ve never been. There’s all this emotion and grunting and screaming. And you think you know what you’re doing, but you really kinda don’t… which only makes the next go’round even more titilating.
But I digress. Enough about my sex life and back to the Games.
If you’re new to all this – trust me, the hubbub is worth every drop of sweat. The Open is designed to be the big filter – to whittle down 55,000+ athletes to a few thousand. That’s where we are now. Looming right around the corner though is a much bigger deal – The Regionals.
Come May 11th, the top 60 men and women, and the top 30 teams coming out of the SoCal Opens will advance on to the showdown at the Pomona Fairgrounds. Each with the end goal of stamping a ticket to the CrossFit Games, which we’re fortunate enough to have in our backyard at the Home Depot Center in Carson.
If you have any kind of love for CrossFit and/or LAX – I urge you to get involved as much as you can. It’s educational, you’ll meet some astounding people, you’ll play a role in the process, and you’ll be representing LAX!
The grand daddy of getting involved. Volunteer at the Regionals (and if you’re lucky enough, the Games themselves!). Since I figure on placing a few spots under the top 60 dudes in SoCal, I’ve already gone and signed up as a volunteer for the Regionals. Talk about an awesome experience – be on the ground floor of the event. Lick sweat off of athletes while changing weights. Shake hands with the people you stalk on Facebook. GET FREE FOOD AND CLOTHING. Whatever your motivation, there’s some good reasons to do it.

No, Sheena, we’re not forming a cheer squad. Leave your pom poms at home, but definitely get your ass to Pomona en masse and cheer on any competitors we might have representing! As of right now Jamie is punching a ticket, and Shira is one solid workout away from making a trip to Regionals.
You best believe LAX will be rollin’ in full force to root on our gladiators. So make sure you keep that weekend free and clear – and ice your voicebox the week before hand. If you’re too broke to buy tickets to the Regionals (they will be pretty cheap, I’m sure) please see the section marked “Volunteer” above.

We are blessed here in SoCal like you would not even understand. If I can speak for the entire region, we have the most competitive, awesome athlete packed division in the world. No disrespect to the other divisions, but there’s a reason why some divisions are named after continents and some are named “So Cal”.
So, if you don’t really want to volunteer and decide to save your voice for yelling at your kids/husband/teacher, just go and enjoy the weekend in the midst of some bonafide top notch athletic awesomeness.
